Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a serious condition which is biologically based and can be filled with emotional upheaval until treated. The two poles of bipolar are mania and depression, thus the former title of Manic-depressive.
Mania is characterized by inflated self-esteem, grandiose thoughts, rapid thoughts, agitation and aggression and can lead to the need for hospitalization at its height. You may have a mild to severe case of this disorder: Bipolar I, Bipolar II, or Cyclothymia. In each case, the brain is functioning about six times faster than normal and you may feel on top of the world.
The depression phase is characterized by low mood most days, negative thinking, sleep problems, irritability, inability to concentrate, agitation, and hopelessness and can also lead to the need for hospitalization at its height.
If you or a loved one have suicidal thoughts reach out for help, tell a friend or family member, make a call to a 24 hour hotline like Grassroots at 410-531- 6677 or the National Prevention Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-8255.
